Abstract
According to Aristotle there are two types of infinity, one actual and the other latent of which only the latter exists. On the other hand, the German-born Cardinal Nicolaus Cusanus (1401-1464) accepted the Former's existence, identifying the actual infinity with God. Through self-reflections concerning this subject, Cusanus recognized the sharp division between the finite and the infinite and as a result came up with the ⟨Docta ignorantia⟩ principle. There is only one possible way in which Man, who is finite, can conceive God, who is infinite. And that is by getting as close as he desires to infinity through approximation, in the same way we calculate the approximate value for √2 or π. By generalizing this fact, we can say that human knowledge, regardless of field, is by nature always an approximation and never an absolute. In a world of actual infinity the maximum and the minimum are congruent because ⟨Coincidentia oppositorum⟩ operates. It is a world of different order which far transcends any need for oppositions. In addition Cusanus resurrected Anaxagora's belief that all elements are contained within each object and created the conceptual pair envelopment-development. All things are to be found in God, and God is to be found in all things. By applying these attributes of the actual infinity Cusanus came up with a very interesting result. The movement of earth results from ⟨Coincidentia oppositorum⟩. And applying the conceptual pair envelopment-development he built a special point of view regarding Mankind, according to which Man becomes 'Microcosmos' or 'condensed universe'. As a bridge connecting the Middle Age with the Modern, what makes Cusanus standout is in the importance he gave to methods of measurement, through which he almost came to discover the law of mass conservation. While thoroughly investigating the modern meaning of Cusanus, we have come to believe that his ⟨Docta ignorantia⟩ principle may coincide to a large degree with Gödel's ⟨Incompleteness Theorem⟩.
