Research Ethics Regulations

These regulations of The Korean History of Science Society set out the principles of research ethics and the organization, duties, and operation of the Research Ethics Committee. They apply to all members of the Society and to every researcher who submits to or presents in the Society's journal.

Research Misconduct (Article 3)

  • Fabrication — creating data or results that do not exist
  • Falsification — manipulating materials, equipment, or processes, or altering or deleting data so that the research record is distorted
  • Plagiarism — appropriating another's ideas, content, or results without proper approval or citation
  • Improper authorship — denying authorship to a contributor without justification, or granting authorship to a non-contributor
  • Duplicate publication — republishing work identical or substantially similar to one's own previous work
  • Other acts seriously departing from the norms accepted in the scholarly community

Committee and Procedure

  • The Committee comprises up to seven members appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Board; terms are two years and renewable (Article 4).
  • An investigation must begin within 30 days of a report and be completed within 180 days, with a full opportunity for the person under investigation to respond (Article 6).
  • Sanctions may include a warning, restriction of submission rights for one to five years, retraction of the published article with notification to KCI, and expulsion from membership (Article 7).
  • Committee proceedings are confidential; results may be disclosed with the President's approval (Article 8).
