This article reviews the contribution of particle accelerators to the establishment of the so-called standard model in particle physics which describes the fundamental building blocks of matter (quarks, leptons, and gauge bosons), along with the advance of theoretical understanding about elementary particles. A particular attention is paid to introduce the original publications relevant to the theoretical progress or experimental findings of interest.
