Abstract

In the late 1950s, unlike most other countries which accepted Nylon, the North Korean government adopted Vinalon, a synthetic fiber invented and improved by a chemical engineer Li Seung Ki(李升基), as the most popular material for clothing. This was certainly a unique phenomenon, acting as a good case to understand North Korean science and technology and its ideological base. Under newly formed situation, Kim Il Sung regime felt necessary to establish their national identity. They directed to self-reliant policy taking a serious view of their special internal and historical features. Eventually, Vinalon was considered eligible to the textile for the people with a national as well as socialist value. It was largely because Vinalon was closest to the traditionally common cotton and could be produced with their abundant natural resources. The success of Vinalon industrialization by themselves, conversely, led to justify their social system. As Vinalon as a new science was considered "scientific", North Korea which yielded it was understood scientific, namely really socialistic. Vinalon success marked a turning-point to power the concept, 'Juche'(self-reliance), which symbolized the new transformation of the society. At last, 'Juche idea' different from Marx-Leninism emerged in the mid-1960s. It was the philosophical interpretation of the new tendency in scientific researches led by Li's Vinalon.
