초록

Although often dismissed as a refined pastime of the literati, horticulture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Chosŏn functioned as a meaningful site of network-based knowledge practices mediated by literati sociability and the materiality of flowers. Rather than developing into a formalized discipline, late Chosŏn horticulture took shape as a relational and collaborative practice grounded in dense networks of scholar-officials, the circulation of plant materials and relative information, and embodied engagements with ornamental species. Stable social ties facilitated organized garden excursions and poetic gatherings that served as key venues for observing, exchanging, and validating plant knowledge. The gifting of rare species from China and Japan stimulated new cycles of cultivation and investigation, while diplomatic missions to Beijing—including routinized visits to urban flower markets—fostered distinctive ways of perceiving, handling, and studying plants. Unlike the pan-European scholarly communities of early modern Europe, which relied on universalist identities and institutional frameworks, this Chosŏn network operated through intimate personal ties and everyday literary activities, with credibility secured through mutual recognition, shared affective experience, and iterative verification among peers. In this way, horticulture developed as a modest yet dynamic mode of knowledge-making that bridged elite inquiry and everyday life.
