Abstract
his study aims to analyze the content of secondary school Home Economics textbooks from the 1960s to the 1980s to trace what changes occurred when family planning project became a part of school education. It will identify the perceptions of middle and high school girls about family planning at the time. Home Economics was essentially an interdisciplinary subject, covering the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences, which allowed for a wide range of discussions related to population and family health. According to the Home Economics textbooks, the main principle of family planning for girls of secondary school age was chastity. The textbooks argued that only heterosexual married couples could have normal births, and that any other birth or non-marriage was considered abnormal. This served to reinforce the social perception of the “normal family” in Korean society.
