Abstract
This paper examines the books on modern Western science and technology translated into Chinese, which were collected by the king and the government in 1880s Korea. King Gojong and the Joseon government collected a total of 220 books on Western science and technology, of which 158 items still remain. This paper classifies these books into the following five categories, gyeokchi 格致 (gezhi in Chinese, similar to natural sciences), mathematics, mechanics and technique, military strategies and weapons, and medicine.
