Abstract
This paper is a study about discourse on agricultural technologies proposed by the authors of Hartlib Circle, a correspondent network led by Samuel Hartlib(1600-1662), in the context of ‘Age of Hartlib(1641-1660)’. The authors of Hartlib Circle then were involved in various activities while establishing broad knowledge network. Among them, agricultural technologies were very important knowledge and activities to fulfill religious utopian blueprint shared by Hartlib Circle. It was recognized a breakthrough in economic and social crisis in early 17th century England to develope productivity in consequence of improvement and dissemination of agricultural technologies.
Existing study about Hartlib by H. R. Trever-Roper was accomplished under the frame of ‘modern science’. Another study by Charles Webster about sciences and technologies including agricultural technologies of Hartlib Circle have emphasized that their shared commonwealth idea was the key to understand their activities.
Apart from these point of view, In this study, it is shown through analyzing agricultural treatises by authors of Hartlib Circle that discourse about agricultural technologies have philosophical facet. Along this, introducing a new agricultural instrument as a perpetual motion can be understood in the context of agricultural status mobility at that time. To establish and propagate new agricultural technologies it was necessary for the authors to reshape their discovery as higher knowledge or instrument.
