Abstract

‘Tongil rice’ (unification rice in Korean) is product of South Korean science and politics in the 1960~70s. It resulted from combining the breeding research of scientist Heu Mun Hue and President Park Chung Hee’s political support. Heu visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines as a research fellow. Afterwards he developed IR667 for Korea, a high-yield rice variety in 1965. It was a wonderful scientific product created by remote cross breeding that was regarded as impossible in the scientific community. IR667 was cultivated widely as ‘Tongil rice’ and revealed features of a high-yield rice. President Park exerted pressure on the rice’s spread to get popular favor and political authority. It brought about the Green Revolution in South Korea and became the symbol of Park’s political success. The government lost interest in the Tongil rice and it slowly went away from Korea’s dinner tables when self-supply of rice, the main crop in South Korea, was achieved in the late 1970s.
