Abstract

In this paper, I investigate the means the ancient Chinese divided the heaven in order to explain the heavenly world. Even before the fenya(分野, field allocations) theory, in which the heaven was divided into 12 regions was widly adopted, there had been several systems of dividing the heaven, such as, the jiuye(九野) theory or the thirteen-field theory of the heaven. Paying attention to those two theories, I suggest that the geographic ideas of the ancient Chinese were reflected in their division of the heaven. In deed, the reflection was not limited to the ideas. It was the reflection of the 'physical' divisions of the earth: states(國) in Spring-Autumn and Warring-States period and provinces(州) after Qin-Han Empires.
