Abstract

The Bronze Figure(銅人) in Changdŏk Palace called "Chimgeum Dongsang(鍼金銅像)", was made of copper and was a man-like size. The meridian channels and its acupoints were engraved in each part of the whole body. That is the only one extant in Korea. Unfortunately, however, the time of production and the name of the maker are unknown. It was suggested by some scholars that the statue was made in the 16th century and influenced by the form of Ming(明) Dynasty, but the theory is uncertain. In this study, the time and maker of the statue is investigated by means of a bibliographic research. The results can be summerized as follows.
1. This statue was manufactured based on the form of Dong'in Suhyoel Chimgu Dogyoeng(銅人腧穴鍼灸圖經: Illustrated Manual of Acupoints of the Bronze Figure) written by Wang Wei-Yi of Northen Song(北宋) Dynasty. It was made of copper by Koreans in the 15th year of King Sejong(1443), and was modified to go with Korean physique.
2. It is supposed that the statue was produced to teach acupuncture and moxibustion to acupuncture doctors and women doctors and to test the qualification of acupuncture-moxa specialist in Palace Hospital(內醫院). The institution of woman doctor and acupuncture-moxa specialist was already in practice in early Chosŏn Dynasty, therefore there was a need for producing the bronze statue for the education and testing the qualification.
