Abstract

With the data of comets examined from Korean sources, Sŭngjŏngwon-Ilgi and Sŏngbyŏndŭngnok, recorded during 14 years of reign of King Hyŏnjong (1660-1674) of Chosŏn Dynasty, the orbital determination of the Great Comet of 1664, observed for about 80 days during the 5th year of King Hyŏnjong, has been carried out. The Olbers method has been used for the computations of the orbital elements of the comet and the results are as following. T 1664 XII 7d.7 UT, q 1.058 A.U., i 159°.9, Ω 83°.2, ω 317°.2, e 1.0. Probable error for declination is about ±1°.7. There is a fair agreement between our results and those of Lindelof's, except for the Ω and ω by about 2° and 6°.5, respectively.
